Sara, a young female border collie, was brought to PAWS …(Pets Are Worth Saving) Florence, Alabama, in a medium-sized cardboard box with her five one-week old puppies. Weighing only 19 pounds (half her normal size), she looked like a “bag of bones” with fur, but was valiantly attempting to feed and care for her pups. Her right front leg had sustained significant nerve and muscle damage, resulting in a useless appendage which had drug the ground and caused the paw to be infected. Her leg needed to be amputated, but she was too weak to survive the surgery. She was exhausted from her own emaciated condition, made worse by her injury and the nutritional demands of her newborns. Sara’s foster family focused their effort on helping Sara heal and become strong enough for surgery, while ensuring that the puppies had the care and nutrition they needed without their mother to support them. Luckily, Sara’s indomitable spirit pulled her through and she started gaining weight and getting stronger. Through all this, she continued to have a loving and gentle spirit and showed her acceptance and appreciation for all the things that were done in order to get her well. When it came time for surgery, she came through with flying colors, adjusting to her three legs very quickly. In no time, she was running and chasing Frisbees. The puppies went to their forever homes and it was time to find Sara the perfect family. And find it, she did. It was obvious from the first time she met her new “daddy” that they were meant to be together. She even goes to work with him, and when she comes home, she has her “mommy” and a dog and cat friend to share her time with. She is definitely one lucky dog.

Most of the time, these are great animals that need a little time for a new loving family to be found. Our goal is to find a permanent “furever” home but many times we have to place these animals with a foster family while they wait. Foster families require assistance with food, vet costs and general care of the animal. The more financial help we receive, the more animals we can help. Please consider “chipping in” a few bucks to assist the foster families caring for the many animals that are waiting on a new family. (And while you are at it: consider adopting one of our precious animals like this boston terrier mix or becoming a foster yourself)
